My trusty old 9-5 died a honorable death. Full throttle in third gear, at very respectable 437K. Old age and three years of stage3 took their toll.

12.03.2011: Tilt and pull
Removing the engine throught the top, did not want to mess with the subframe. Used a load leveller to tilt the engine and pull it with the gearbox attached.

The whole thing was surprisingly easy. Once the engine is out of the car, the gearbox can be easily removed and a stand bolted on.

The spark plug #2 melted completely.

12.03.2011: Where is the piston?
A gaping hole where piston #2 used to be. The pin was strong enough to dig 3-4 mm deep grooves in cylinder walls before it stopped.

12.03.2011: There it is!
Most of the piston remains found in the oil pan. It made four holes in the block. Some bits lodged themselves in the balance shaft chamber.

The head is scored, but not that bad. The head gasket was in perfect shape.

Replaced the bent valves with a new set, refreshed the seals, and topped it off with a pair of T5 camshafts.

This block came off my old 1995 900 convertible, with a mileage almost three times less than the 9-5.
